About Us:
The Human Neuroimaging Center investigates the human connectome — the dynamic constellation of connections through which information flows and is represented across the brain. By studying this organization, we aim to understand how mental capacities emerge, develop throughout life, become altered by mental illness, and can be strengthened through neuromodulation and healthy lifestyle practices.
The Notre Dame Human Neuroimaging Center (ND-HNC) is located on the Lower Level of the Veldman Family Psychology Clinic, a dedicated 35,000-square-foot clinical and research facility located in South Bend, Indiana. The facility consists of a fully integrated environment for participant recruitment, clinical assessment, neuroimaging, electrophysiological recording, noninvasive brain stimulation, data processing, and collaborative scientific analysis.
Services:
The Notre Dame Human Neuroimaging Center is home to a state-of-the-art Siemens MAGNETOM Cima.X 3 Tesla whole-body MRI system, optimized for high-performance clinical and research imaging.
Encore MRI Simulator (Psychology Software Tools/RadSim), which provides a realistic MRI environment for participant acclimation, protocol piloting, and training. The simulator includes a realistic 60 cm bore, motorized participant table, integrated positioning lasers, environmental lighting, cooling systems, and participant safety monitoring.
EEG acquisition laboratories, a centralized EEG control room, and a participant preparation suite supporting high-density electrophysiological recording.
Noninvasive brain stimulation studies are conducted in a dedicated TMS laboratory equipped for experimental and translational neuromodulation research.
Functional MRI (fMRI) Task Presentation & Synchronization for cognitive and behavioral paradigms, our center utilizes a fully integrated, medical-grade turnkey hardware and software system from NordicNeuroLab.
Additional Task Deployment systems fully configured to support and deploy the industry-standard software packages utilized in cognitive neuroscience, including MATLAB (for custom routines and Psychtoolbox), PsychoPy (for Python-based experimental design), and E-Prime (for millisecond-accurate script execution). Psychophysiological Integration: Beyond driving visual and auditory paradigms via the NordicNeuroLab system, the workstation is specifically engineered and wired to receive real-time psychophysiological inputs (such as GSR, respiration, or heart rate monitoring devices). This setup allows investigators to acquire synchronized behavioral, physiological, and neuroimaging datasets concurrently.
High-Performance Computation: To accommodate the diverse computational demands of modern neuroimaging, our facility provides a scalable, multi-tiered computing environment designed to support projects of any size. Whether a study requires simple, localized analyses conducted on a single subject, or massive, multi-site datasets demanding highly parallelized processing pipelines, our integrated infrastructure ensures optimal throughput and efficiency.
